How can organisations build a responsible AI framework?

Since the invention of Artificial Intelligence (AI), businesses in every industry have had the chance to harness its potential for multiple purposes. Some have utilised it to help individuals discover the most efficient commuting routes, while others have employed it to address pressing issues such as climate change. However, there is a darker side to this technology as well. There have been instances where AI has proven to be counterproductive for organisations, resulting in damage to their reputation and financial losses. For example, in 2016, Microsoft introduced its first chatbot, Tay, on Twitter with the aim of addressing and resolving customer issues using a conversational approach. Unfortunately, malicious individuals exploited the chatbot's algorithm and influenced it with hate tweets and inflammatory remarks. Consequently, Tay published objectionable content, leading to Microsoft to shutting down the tool.

Amazon provides another case in point. With the development of a recruitment tool, Amazon sought to streamline the hiring process and identify the most qualified candidates. However, the AI was trained on biased data, causing the tool to exhibit a preference for white male candidates over others. Due to the manifestation of misogyny and racism in the AI tool, Amazon decided to discontinue its use.

These are just a few prominent examples that have garnered attention. However, numerous other instances exist where AI has caused harm and raised ethical concerns. Thus, it has become imperative for organisations to build a responsible AI framework to mitigate any potential negative impacts.

  1. Fairness - Striving for fairness allows the AI system to treat all individuals without prejudice. Hence, to ensure fairness, equity, and non-discrimination in AI systems, it is crucial for businesses to address potential biases and implement measures to mitigate them.
  2. Transparency - When AI-powered applications are useful in making informed decisions that influence our lives, it’s imperative for companies and their stakeholders to understand how those decisions are made.
  3. Accountability - Being responsible for any unintended consequences or negative impacts caused by the AI system is accountability. Ensuring accountability in AI requires organisations to identify the potential risks associated with deploying this technology and take measures to mitigate them.
  4. Privacy and Security - Safeguarding sensitive information and ensuring its proper use is crucial to protect privacy and enhance security. By implementing robust protocols and advanced encryption techniques, we can effectively mitigate risks and vulnerabilities, creating a safer environment for all stakeholders.
  5. Inclusiveness - Creating an inclusive environment involves understanding and addressing the needs of diverse groups and individuals. It is essential for organisations to ensure that their AI systems are designed with inclusivity in mind, considering factors such as accessibility and diversity of datasets used.
  6. Reliability and safety- AI systems should be designed and tested to operate reliably, ensuring the safety of all stakeholders involved. Organisations must prioritise thorough testing and risk assessments to prevent potential harm or accidents.

How can organisation build a robust framework for responsible AI?

Like any revolutionary technology, AI comes with its own set of risks and challenges. These include concerns about data quality, privacy, security, and the potential for malicious actors to misuse AI technology for misinformation campaigns.

Recognising the need to address these challenges, governments worldwide have made significant progress in establishing regulatory frameworks for responsible AI development. For example, the EU AI Act is the world's first dedicated law on AI, aiming to ensure safe and lawful AI use while upholding fundamental rights. Likewise, the US Federal Government's Office of Science and Technology Policy has issued AI principles for federal agencies to follow during AI technology development and deployment.

So, how should businesses respond in light of these changes? With the regulatory landscape evolving rapidly, businesses must proactively lay the groundwork to adapt swiftly and establish responsible AI governance frameworks that align with their values and business objectives. Additionally, they should cultivate comprehensive and dynamic AI frameworks that bridge the gap between innovation and responsible deployment.

However, where should they start? This is quite concerning question. Here are some key steps organisations can take to build a responsible AI framework:

Step 1: Evaluate your readiness

Before embarking on the journey of developing a responsible AI framework, it is crucial to assess your readiness in adopting AI technology. This requires a holistic approach towards understanding AI, taking into consideration your business priorities, objectives, and values. To begin, ask yourself some fundamental questions:

  1. What is your company's vision for responsible AI, considering its industry and regulatory environment?
  1. How does this vision align with your organisation's existing values, considering its business governance?
  1. What are the potential risks associated with AI implementation?

By evaluating your preparedness and addressing these key considerations, you can lay the foundation for a responsible and successful AI framework.

Step 2: Develop a multidisciplinary team

The development and deployment of AI require a multidisciplinary approach, involving experts from diverse fields such as data science, ethics, law, compliance, and risk management. Data serves as the driving force behind AI-based models like Language Learning Models (LLMs) used in GenAI. These LLMs heavily rely on a substantial amount of data and have the ability to generate additional data based on the original input. The quality of the data provided to these models significantly impacts the outcomes. Hence, it is crucial to ensure the right quality of data for responsible AI deployment, as poor data can lead to unsatisfactory outputs, diminishing the value of AI and potentially causing harm.

To achieve this, companies must invest in data management frameworks that ensure transparent and accountable use of data. This includes establishing protocols for collecting, processing, and storing data that align with ethical principles such as fairness, privacy, non-discrimination, and accountability. It also involves regularly auditing data sources and algorithms to identify any potential biases or inconsistencies.

Step 4: Mind the bias

Responsible AI aims to ensure fairness and prevent discrimination in decision-making. However, AI systems can unintentionally perpetuate biases and lead to discriminatory outcomes due to their reliance on historical data with inherent biases.

In fact, studies have shown that AI-enabled recruitment can exhibit biases based on gender, race, and personality traits. These biases often stem from limited data sets and subjective perspectives of algorithm designers.

To mitigate this risk, businesses must be vigilant during AI development and deployment.
