Earth Day: Unleashing software's potential for sustainability

by Sally Scott, Chief Marketing & ESG Officer

As the Chief Marketing and ESG Officer at OneAdvanced, I am continually inspired by the transformative impact our software has on sustainability. For us, ESG is not just a checkbox exercise; it's woven into every line of code we write. This Earth Day, I’m excited to share how our innovative solutions are helping customers achieve their environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals.

A Paperless Frontier

Paper has long played a pivotal role in business - even in an age of digital workflows, we still refer to "paperwork". It may seem like a small and innocent part of the world of work, but its impact on our planet is undeniably colossal. Beyond deforestation concerns, paper production processes emit greenhouse gases into our atmosphere, contributing to climate change.

Through digital transformation we are helping customers like the NHS to digitalise and reduce or remove their need for paper. With Docman, we are able to save 6 tonnes of paper a day by digitalising letters and communications that would traditionally have been printed.

Another example is our virtual learning solution that has saved the learners of our education customers 1.5 million sheets of paper in 2023.

By investing in digitalisation of workflows our customers are seeing the speed and efficiencies of digital workflows, whilst at the same time helping to provide a greener and more sustainable future.

Cloud computing's green halo

Our commitment extends to promoting cloud-based solutions that support digital workflows by working with partners who provide modern, greener cloud infrastructure. One of our partners is Amazon Web Services. They are the world’s largest cloud storage provider and have achieved 90% renewable energy to power their infrastructure.

This transition shouldn't be understated; it results in tangible environmental benefits. The energy-efficient data centres required for cloud storage consume less electricity compared to traditional on-premises servers, thereby reducing the carbon footprint of digital storage.

Waste not, want not

Sustainable energy usage is just one aspect of environmental responsibility. Materials are vital for various workflows, and ensuring efficiency in material usage can make a crucial difference. Our software provides our customers with the power to digitalise workflows, track shipments and ensure efficiency in order to reduce waste. We see this at work with our distribution, logistics and manufacturing customers. Through our software these customers save more than £700,000 a week in reduced human error.

Envisioning a Sustainable Workplace

At OneAdvanced, we are dedicated to empowering our clients not only to meet but exceed their ESG targets. As we celebrate Earth Day, we reaffirm our commitment to delivering software solutions that foster a more sustainable, efficient, and accountable corporate landscape and that have a positive impact on not only our customers, but their customers, people and communities too. Together, we are not just participants in the digital age but active contributors to a more sustainable and equitable world.
