About Middlesbrough College
Middlesbrough College is a further education and apprenticeship provider and a long-standing OneAdvanced customer. Serving learners across a broad range of academic, technical and vocational programmes, the college uses a range of OneAdvanced solutions to support teaching, learning and operational activities.
Looking to streamline operations and support future growth, the college identified an opportunity to strengthen its approach to risk management.
At the time, risk was being managed through a series of spreadsheets, but as requirements evolved, the team wanted a more structured solution that would support its existing governance framework.
To achieve this, Middlesbrough College selected Risk Management, replacing spreadsheet-based processes with a tailored solution designed to support the recording, monitoring and review of organisational risk.
The Problem
Risk was managed through spreadsheets rather than a dedicated system, making it increasingly difficult to maintain a consistent and up-to-date view across the organisation.
The Solution
Risk Management, a purpose-built solution designed to support the identification, monitoring and administration of organisational risk.
The Result
Middlesbrough College is implementing a more structured approach to risk management through a centralised platform designed to support its governance objectives.
The challenge
Looking to strengthen its approach to risk management, Middlesbrough College wanted a solution that could support its governance requirements without forcing teams to adapt to new ways of working.
As risk management requirements evolved, relying on spreadsheets was becoming increasingly cumbersome and time-consuming. The college wanted a more structured approach that would make it easier to record, review and maintain risk information while supporting greater accuracy and consistency.

What made the difference
When evaluating potential solutions, the college focused on finding a platform that offered the right balance of functionality, usability and long-term fit.
Several factors stood out:
- The solution closely matched how the college already managed and administered risk
- It offered purpose-built functionality designed for managing organisational risk
- It supported the college's wider technology strategy
- It provided a modern, practical alternative to spreadsheet-based processes
Risk Managment also offered value for money and, while not the primary driver behind the decision, pricing compared favourably with other options under consideration.
As Dale notes:
"Price certainly wasn't a leading factor, but the price was really competitive."
Reflecting on the decision, Dale says:
"The platform closely matched how we already managed risk."
Microsoft and M365-based options were considered, but the college felt they were either too generic or would require significant adaptation to support its requirements. The evaluation also identified relatively few specialist providers in the market.
As Dale explains:
"I looked at Microsoft. They were not a good fit. There wasn't a massive amount of competition in the market for risk."
Ultimately, the deciding factor was finding a solution that aligned closely with the college's requirements while providing functionality specifically designed for risk management.

Moving forward
Implementation is currently underway, with the college replacing manually maintained spreadsheets with a centralised risk management solution.
Early feedback has been positive, and the project supports the college's wider objective of maintaining a streamlined technology environment while providing a more structured approach to recording and managing risk.
As implementation continues, the college's focus remains on embedding the solution within its existing governance processes and realising the full value of a dedicated approach to risk management.
By moving away from spreadsheet-based processes, the college has established a foundation that can support future requirements as they evolve.
