Is this Microsoft announcement your signal to move to Intune?

Microsoft has announced a major shift for Configuration Manager, moving to an annual release cadence and focusing all future innovation on Microsoft Intune. This marks a pivotal moment for endpoint management, with Intune offering cloud-native capabilities, faster innovation, and simplified infrastructure. Is it time to futureproof your organisation by making the switch?

What did Microsoft Announce?

On 5th November 2025, Microsoft Configuration Manager (ConfigMgr) entered a new phase. Microsoft announced that starting with version 2609, ConfigMgr will move to an annual release cadence and clearly signalled that all future innovation will be focused on Microsoft Intune. This announcement signals the era of ConfigMgr is ending, and the future of endpoint management is more cloud-native than ever.

Is now the time to move to Intune?

Microsoft’s move to an annual release cadence for Configuration Manager means there will be a slower feature velocity in ConfigMgr, while Microsoft has been very clear that “all new innovation will occur” in Intune. Intune is now where new capabilities will land first, especially around modern provisioning, cloud-based policy, security, and automation.

If you stay heavily invested in ConfigMgr, you risk being on the maintenance side of the equation, rather than leading the innovation wave.

The benefits of moving to Intune

As Microsoft shifts its focus toward cloud-based innovation, Intune has become the natural next step for organisations looking to simplify operations, strengthen security, and support a flexible workforce. Here are the key reasons to consider adoption now:

  1. Cloud-native management: Intune lets you enrol devices from anywhere and manage them remotely without relying on on-premises infrastructure.
  2. Innovation momentum: Microsoft is investing heavily in Intune, delivering new features and capabilities at a faster pace.
  3. Unified endpoint support: Manage Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android devices all in one place, enabling a consistent approach across your entire device estate.
  4. Simplified infrastructure: Moving to Intune reduces complexity with no need to maintain site servers, SQL databases, or on-prem management infrastructure - cutting operational overhead and costs.
  5. Identity and Security alignment: Intune integrates seamlessly with Microsoft Entra ID, conditional access, and Zero Trust frameworks, ensuring that devices and users are managed through identity-driven policies rather than static network controls.
  6. Cost efficiency: For many organisations, Intune is already included within existing Microsoft 365 or Enterprise Mobility + Security (EMS) licences making the switch more accessible without additional spend.
  7. Futureproofing: With Configuration Manager’s release cadence slowing, adopting Intune now ensures your organisation remains aligned with Microsoft’s long-term endpoint management roadmap and continuous innovation.

Together, these benefits position Intune not just as a replacement for ConfigMgr, but as the foundation for secure, scalable, and modern endpoint management.
